2014 saw the first marketing coup from Maserati to open up to a wider customer base and provide a 50.000$ car, marketed through the Superbowl.

Now the Porsche Macan, debuting this year, shows the arrival of another contender playing the affordability card. Granted the base Cayenne costs about the same price as the Macan, but while the Cayenne was an exeption (A Porsche SUV, wtf?? Why not a diesel while they're at it!! Wait...) it seems to transforms itself into a whole line of somewhat more affordable and "normal" family cars.

So what are we going to see next? I don't think Ferrari will come up with a somewhat affordable 4 door saloon, nor will Lambo, but what about Aston Martin? Don't you guys want to see a 50.000$ 2015 Aston Martin Lagonda?? I can't help but think it would be really cool to see more Astons in the streets...

EDIT: the Ghibli is actually 65.000$ new, my bad. Nonetheless, quite a bit cheaper than what we are used to and made a lot more affordable than their other cars

Since when is buying a $50k car "affordable"?

I don't think Aston will go that low, but what about a cheaper Jag, say a 3 series fighter?

I'm not sure how new of a trend it is, actually.

$50,000? Try $65,600 USD . I doubt Aston Martin will try to get into the "affordable" luxury market but that's just a gut feeling.

Also, let's be honest here, affordable luxury is a terrible idea. Camry and Accord buyers who step into a Mercedes or Audi aren't used to paying for Mercedes and Audi service or repair costs. Assuming reliability isn't a question (it is), routine maintenance on a Mercedes is going to cost more than the same work on a Toyota. All I see in the future is a used car market full of neglected entry-level luxury cars.

Compared to what they usually sell, it is... When your average car cost 80 to 90k$ or more, suddenly coming up with a 50k$ make the brand itself more affordable.

Keep in mind we are talking about Maserati, Aston or Porsche... Not Kia or Toyota

Given the relationship between Ferrari and Maserati, isn't the new Maserati effectively the $50,000 Ferrari sedan?

I would not be surprised to see AM come out the an entry-level luxury car in the near future in the least.

Yet KIA is selling the K900 for $60,000 and Toyota has a $45000+ Avalon... So yes you could actually include them!

My bad, went a bit lower than what I had in mind... nonetheless still quite a bit cheaper than what they usually do...

I want Chrysler to drop the Ghibli's V6 turbo (which I think is a Pentastar anyway) into the 300, and name it the Chrysler 300TC by Maserati

That'd be great.

The Maserati is actually a 65.000$ car.

And for Aston Martin to launch a cheaper car, it would require HUGE investments. Developping a niche car is less expensive than developping a mass production car.

as I commented in the Morning Shift, it is indeed not exactly new... But it was also a huge failure and it desappeared for the past 20 years... As far as the Mondial is concerned, it used to cost close to 100.000$ in todays $$ when new... Cheaper but not that much

Absolutely - by almost half. It will be interesting to see what happens with the Ghibli. If maintenance isn't an issue (it's Italian so probably yes) these can be had for around $40k in 3-4 years.

Aston Martin doesn't have the economy of scale to allow for cheap cars, even with partnerships.

Aston however is one of those brands that doesn't need to pander to make sales or increase profits. Their cheapest car starts at over 100k, it still does pretty well. They don't need to be affordable because they are not in it for massive amounts of sales, never have been.

Maserati has to. FIAT pumped 2 billion into them. They have no choice but to increase sales. IF they don't, Maserati goes down. Plain and simple.

Aston Martin can keep selling 2k vehicles a year and be just fine.

I think reliability and maintenance will be up to pair with a car in this price range... Not worse nor better than Audi or BMW... Keep in mind Maserati has a similar warranty as other manufacturers so I doubt it will be in anyway different...

I've never been confident about reachnig my destinations in these types of cars but for some reason, I believe in this Ghibli :)

The difference is that Maserati has no choice but to sell 30k a year.

FIAT put way too much into them to not get a return on investment. Aston Martin? They can sell 2k a year and be happy. They aren't as profit driven, nor is their market exactly one where it matters to always be changing.

They are still using 'archaic' VH underpinnings for their cars, like anyone really cares

Stop ruining my dreams please... :)

I still like to think they could... Maybe not to the extend of the Ghibli, but just producing a cheaper car that would in no way put to shame the Aston Martin brand like the Cygnet did lol

Ah true as well, but that's assuming the previous owners trade in their CLA for either a newer one or a C-Class.

It's ridiculous. To me, a brand new WRX at $30k is just stretching my comfort limits for a 5 year loan. A hot wheels-sized CUV for $50k? You've got to be kidding me
